A cricket stridula in the home, which is considered a lucky charm, because “everyone knows that a chimney cricket brings good luck to a house” 3. One day, a mysterious old stranger visits the family, who hosts him for a few days. Their neighbor, the miser Mr. Tackleton, employs in his toy workshop poor Caleb, who has a blind daughter, Bertha, and a son, Edward, gone to South America, of which we have no news and whose we think he’s dead. Tackleton is about to marry May, Edward’s bride, though she does not like him and still thinks of his missing suitor.
