Les Quarante-Cinq pdf
The Forty-Five is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, with the collaboration of Auguste Maquet written between 1847-1848. This is the third and last novel of the Valois trilogy that exploits the historical context of the wars of religion. It follows Queen Margot and The Lady of Monsoreau.
Les Quarante-Cinq Summary
The action takes place between 1585 and 1586, thirteen years after the massacre of St. Bartholomew. Having succeeded his brother Charles IX, Henry III reigns for ten years without having managed to calm the political and religious agitation that delivers the kingdom to the factions. In fact, Dumas blithely mixes dates. Part of the plot refers to the seventh war of religion known as the Lovers’ War with the capture of Cahors by Henri de Navarre, five years earlier. William the Taciturn, assassinated in 1584, is still alive in Dumas’s novel, and if it is true that he encouraged the Duke of Anjou to covet the crown of the Netherlands and that he became Duke of Brabant in 1582, it was in 1583, and not in 1585 or 1586, that the attack on Antwerp took place, to which the Duke de Joyeuse did not participate, but which was a French defeat.
